This week’s track is "My Ship" by Company of Wolves from their excellent self-titled 1990 album, which I consider to be one of the last "classic rock" records ever made. "My Ship" is one of the catchiest cuts off the record. You just can't resist feeling better after hearing this song - an optimistic anthem about turning a corner and "dropping your anchor away". I wish the band's ship would have come in, but sadly it was lost at sea.

This week’s track is "He Hit Me (It Felt Like A Kiss)" by The Crystals. One of the more interesting songs in the "oldies but goodies" file, and it speaks volumes about how much society has changed over the years (for most people at least - some could argue this could be today's theme song for women dating Chris Brown).

In keeping with Kurt Torster's piece on Def Leppard this week (see here), I thought I'd spotlight a cover of their hit "Love Bites". This stripped down version, featuring just a single acoustic guitar and a female vocal is from the digital album "Acoustic Hits: A Def Leppard Acoustic Tribute" found here. There is a whole series of these "Acoustic Hits" releases, but finding information on the people performing the tunes is challenging. The vocalist on "Love Bites" really nails it - her delicate and earnest delivery puts the song into a whole new light...very nicely done. Can anybody tell me who it is?

This week’s track is “His Dreams” by Lindsay Mac from her 2008 album, “Stop Thinking”. Lindsay is an innovative writer and performer – she tells vivid stories with her lyrics and plucks or strums the cello in her music. “His Dreams” is a poignant tale of a boy lured away from the family farm through the backdoor draft to fight in the war. She pulls no punches and her haunting vocal will give you chills. Be sure to check out the rest of her album for more, including a cover of “Blackbird”.

This week’s track is "Still Fighting It" by Ben Folds from his masterful 2001 album, "Rockin' The Suburbs". This song was released as the second single but didn't really get the attention it deserves. This beautiful piano ballad is a father-son song, balancing deep thoughts about growing old ("Everybody knows it hurts to grow up") with the mundane pieces of everyday life ("You want a Coke? Maybe some fries?"). Brings a tear to the eye every time, "You're so much like me...I'm sorry. One day you'll fly...away from me."

This week’s track is "Everybody" by Animal Bag from their self-titled 1992 album. A little nugget of funk rock with a great chorus hook that got washed under by the shifting musical tide of the day.

This week’s track is "The One" by Tracy Bonham from her debut 1996 album, "The Burdens of Being Upright". Tracy was best known for her alt-rock hit, "Mother Mother", but this little pop rock tune is my favorite from the CD.

This week’s track is "My Obsession" by the Aussie band Icehouse from their breakthrough album, "Man Of Colours". This wonderful third single did light do as well as its predecessors "Crazy" and "Electric Blue", but it is a lost gem from this era of 80s pop rock. Plus they sport some of the best mullets you've ever seen. The song might have done better if the lead singer looked a wee bit more interested to do the video. Watch for the keyboardist "shooting" the piano keys!

This week’s track is "Indie Queen" by the Marvelous 3 from their amazing 1999 album, "Hey! Album". Without question, this track is one of the most melodic tunes of the 90s, driven by the masterful skills of the prolific Butch Walker. Walker was introduced to the masses as a member of the hairband come lately Southgang, and today his solo career has produced diverse efforts with mixed reviews. To me, nothing tops his time in Marv3 and songs like "Indie Queen" illustrate why. One listen and this stunning chorus is in your head for life.

This week’s track is "I Would Be Your Man" by The Odds from their 1996 album, "Good Weird Feeling". This alternative rock band with pop rock leanings got lost in the shuffle among Gin Blossoms and Better Than Ezra. You can find this CD for a penny and they are worth looking into for gems like this track.

This week’s track is by Toad the Wet Sprocket from their breakthrough 1991 album, "Fear". "In My Ear" should have been in a single - features their signature sunny melodies but with some of the most biting lyrics, such as "Never meant half of the things that I said to you...so you know there's a half that might be true" and "I am standing with the perfect view - I could not go far enough away from you".

This week’s track is by Lisa Loeb. It is a cover of REO Speedwagon's big hit "Keep On Loving You". I don't think this live performance (or a studio version) ever made it onto one of her albums. Enjoy!

This week’s track is "Good Times" by the Hoodoo Gurus from their album, "Blow Your Cool!". Recognize the backing vocals? They are supplied by The Bangles!

This week’s track is by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy from their 2004 album, "Everything You Want For Christmas". The popular modern swing band does a great interpretation of "Mr. Heatmiser" from the children's classic, "The Year Without A Santa Claus".

This week’s track is "Tell Me A Story" by the underrated Aussie group called 1927. The song is from their 1990 album, "The Other Side". Fans of 80s pop rock from the likes of INXS, Glass Tiger, or Mr. Mister...you need to check this band out.

This week’s track is by Johnny Cash from his album, "American IV: The Man Comes Around". In the twilight of his career, the legendary Johnny Cash released a string of albums filled with cover songs, putting his unique stamp on songs you'd never imagine appropriate for him to perform. Take this chill-inducing version of "Hurt", originally done by Nine Inch Nails, for example. So haunting, so deep, so Cash. One of the last songs he ever recorded, and his final music video.

This week’s track is by Todd Snider from his live album, "Near Truths and Hotel Rooms". This song is done in the style of classic Bob Dylan, and brilliantly satirizes the 90s music scene. A must hear!
